In Sunday’s Gospel reading from Mark 10:35-45, Jesus defines leadership in a different way. Using himself as a model, Jesus teaches that service to others is the call of Christian life. He makes a very clear distinction between the behaviour of rulers and their desire for power and recognition. In contrast, those who would be leaders in the Christian community must be the first ones to offer themselves to others.
Dear Parents and Carers
What a wonderful week at Aggies, we have finished the week with a wonderful awareness raising day as we “went red for dyslexia.” Thank you to all of the staff and students for their work to prepare this special day and an extra thank you to Lucas Blair for sharing his video with us.

Wonderful Year 3 Poetry Learning
I have been lucky enough to work with our Year 3 students as they have been working on their poetry learning. They have been engaging in “paint-chip poetry”. Take a look at their wonderful work, it includes their learning intention, the success criteria which was developed by the students, an amazing brainstorm about colours, and their final published works. We are so proud of their learning!

Pizza Lunch
Today I had the lovely opportunity to enjoy a pizza lunch with the children that have achieved 400 Dojo points. This is a very special occasion for the children and it is lovely for them to be acknowledged by the school community.

Uniform Request - Thank you!
Thank you to the many families that answered our request for any spare uniforms to be sent into school. We received a range of sizes that have helped restock some of our supplies for the new student enrolments.
Staff Professional Learning Day
St Agnes’ staff will participate in a Staff Professional Learning Day on Friday 19 November. On this day staff will receive input from Bishop Greg Homeming, with a focus on the topics of Truth, Spirituality and Goodness. All staff in the Diocese of Lismore are required to complete these modules each year. We appreciate the support of families making alternative arrangements for their children on this day as staff will be off site to complete this learning.
Last Day of Term Four
The last day for students in 2021 will be Wednesday 15 December. The school office will be open on Thursday 16 December.

Each session will be one hour long and 10 children will be the maximum at each session. We ask that you register your child for these sessions through our online booking system. Go to www.schoolinterviews.com.au and enter the booking code - tk827 and choose the times that suit you.

There will be free babysitting provided at the school for your assistance.
Socktober
At St Agnes' Primary School we work with Church and community leaders to provide people the opportunity for a full, enriched life - physically and spiritually.
This allows us to speak out and act for justice so that we can play our part in improving our world. Pope Francis asks each of us to be missionaries in our own way, regardless of any limitations or troubles, and share goodness and love. The Kindergarten Centre run by the Good Shepherd Sisters in Bangkok supports more than 100 children from disadvantaged undocumented and migrant families. The children attend regular classes and receive a nutritious meal and healthcare. This program is also building a foundation for children to develop a positive sense of self-worth. This year the SRC will be holding a Socktober shootout using soccer balls made from recycled materials. The video of how to make these was linked in last weeks’ newsletter and opportunities to make these will be held at school.
At St Agnes' School the SRC will be donating some of our Craft for Service profits to the Good Shepherd Sisters enabling them to continue their valuable work in this social justice space.
What is Operation Christmas Child?
Operation Christmas Child is a hands-on way for you to bless children in need across the world by filling shoe boxes with toys, hygiene items, school supplies, and fun gifts. We collect the boxes and distribute them in the name of Jesus Christ to children living in vulnerable situations. This year St Agnes’ Primary will be supporting this charity again. We will be using some of the profits raised through Craft for Service to purchase the items to fill the shoeboxes.
P&F Monthly Meeting
All parents and carers are invited to join our wonderful family representatives on Monday 18 October at 5:45pm via zoom to discuss new initiatives and ways to support the enhancement of our school. If you would like to join the zoom, please email pandfstagnes@gmail.com so the link can be shared with you. All families are welcome to share their valuable input. Items on Monday nights agenda are:
In October, the Church celebrates this prayer in a special way: reminding us of its simple beauty and gentle power. It is a time of grace for us to return to this prayer if we have let it slip away: or perhaps to discover for the first time, in the company of Mary, how the Rosary can guide us into this form of prayer. Students will be involved in learning more about this beautiful Prayer during the month.

Dear Parents and Carers
I have had many conversations with parents recently who have observed their kids displaying big feelings and big behaviours! In the article below, Karen Young from Hey Sigmund writes about how we can respond to big feelings and what our children need from us. Here is an excerpt from the full article:
Children communicate through behaviour, and behind all big behaviour there will always be a valid need. The need might be for safety, connection, sleep, food, power and influence, space to do their own thing. We all have these needs, but children are still developing the capacity to meet them in ways that aren’t as disruptive for them or the people around them. This will take a while. The part of the brain that can calm big feelings, the prefrontal cortex, isn’t fully developed until mid to late twenties. Of course, as they grow and develop they will expand their capacity to calm their big feelings, but in the meantime, they will need lots of co-regulation experiences with us to help them develop strong neural foundations for this.

Year 4

Summer Sports Trials - Cancelled
Unfortunately, the Hastings Summer Sports Trials which were scheduled to take place in Kempsey this term have been cancelled. We will announce a new date when it is announced in the new year.
Swimming Carnival
We are hopeful that with the continued easing of restrictions that our school swimming carnival will go ahead at the end of this term. The focus of this carnival is participation and fostering a sense of school spirit. Some schools use their end of year swimming carnival to double up as a selection event for their zone team to compete in the Hastings Zone Swimming carnival in February of next year. However, it is felt that holding a separate selection trial at the beginning of next year gives our potential competitors the whole of the summer break to improve, and that our junior swimmers in particular will benefit from this.
How good is this photo!
Some of our Year Six students have been coordinating with each other to ride their bikes to school. When it was pointed out to one of these riders that this was beneficial to their physical and mental health, and also helped them with problem solving and risk assessment skills, the rider just shrugged and said “It’s just good fun riding a bike with your mates!”. There really doesn't need to be any other reason!
If you would like your child to ride to school with a buddy, but don’t have anyone for them to ride with, contact the school and we will see what we can arrange!
